What does it take to impeach the president of the US?

On the evening of September 24, 2019, Nancy Pelosi (Speaker) announced that the House of Representatives would begin a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Pelosi accused Trump of betraying his oath of office, U.S. national security, the integrity of the country’s elections and alleged he may have abused the powers of the presidency.

On December 10, the House Judiciary Committee unveiled their articles of impeachment: one for abuse of power and one for obstruction of Congress. Three days later, the Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to approve both articles.

On December 16, the House Judiciary Committee released a report specifying criminal bribery and wire fraud charges as part of the abuse of power charges. On December 18, after a full day of contentious debate, the House voted along party lines to impeach Trump for both charges.

Now that the impeachment is set to move to the Senate for trial and Republican senators backing the President. It’s believed that if they were allowed to cast their ballot in secret there would be at least 35 senators who will vote for trump’s removal. Unlikely, which may not happen either.

While Nancy Pelosi is not yet ready to name her team for President Donald Trump’s trial in the U.S. Senate, the trial is expected to begin in January.

Though President has been impeached he may not lose his office since the republicans are in majority in the senate. And he is aiming for a second term and he may also win.

Hopefully, 2020 brings closure to the impeachment drama.
