Steven Spielberg is one of Hollywood’s most renowned directors, and is often associated with successful blockbuster cinema. During a candid interview with The New York Times, Steven Spielberg revealed a little fact about his relationship with his films – he says that he doesn’t rewatch them.
Shocking, isn’t it? But, why does this legendary director not rewatch his own award-winning films?
He has stated, “I’m really too busy, both in my private life and in my professional life, to have a lot of time to dwell on success or failure.” He feels that watching his old films feels like a step backwards.
The director also continued, “That’s why I don’t sit down and look at my movies on a movie screen after I’ve made them.”
Spielberg worries that he would be tempted to settle on his past achievements, rather than aiming for greater things if he looks back. Spielberg clarified that viewing his earlier works might cause him to refocus his attention from creativity to introspection, and he is unwilling to take that chance.
As one of the busiest and most successful filmmakers in Hollywood, Spielberg believes that rewatching his work is ineffective. In addition to taking up time, it can cause him to lose sight of the future of storytelling.
