The Hollywood Reporter has learned from sources that the actor Jon Bernthal will return as Frank Castle, a.k.a. antihero the Punisher, in Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again for Disney+.
The series, which starts filming in New York this month, also stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio in addition to Bernthal.
Born Again is slated to be a massive 18-episode epic. The program is slated to premiere in the spring of 2024. Writers and executive producers Matt Corman and Chris Ord are working behind the scenes.
Born Again draws its name from a famous Daredevil storyline that was written by Frank Miller and illustrated by David Mazzuchelli and released in 1986.
In the second season of 2016 of the Netflix adaptation of Daredevil, Bernthal made his acting debut as the grieving father-turned-vigilante. He later became the star of his own Netflix series, The Punisher, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2019. He played the title role in both seasons.
“I think if there’s any let up on that character, you do a disservice to the character, to every iteration of the character, to every comic book that’s come before, and to all of the unbelievable fans of the character,” said the versatile actor. “This character means so much to people in the military. So like I said before, it’s not about whether you do the character; it’s about whether you can do it right, and I’m only interested in doing it right.”
