After surpassing the $1 Billion mark, the Joker is still the talk of the town. I mean, why not? The audience can’t get enough of it, the critics love it and the Box office is soaring. Joker is now the highest grossing R-rated movie surpassing DC heavyweights like the Dark Knight.
With its thumping success, the question remains–
Will the Joker have a sequel?
Short answer– Maybe.
Long answer– Read on.
For the past one day, avid fans are hysteric, speculating if the rumors of a part 2 are true. However, Director Todd Philips has squashed rumors that suggest that Joker may get a sequel as there is no contract in place with Warner Bros. agreeing to only one movie. So it is official that Joker will not get a sequel.
But that’s not the end of it.
Considering the success and the way the movie was received, Warner Bros. might as well revive the movie. The Hollywood Reporter cooked up a rumor speaking of a Joker sequel and despite it being a rumor, it doesn’t show signs of dying off.
This is what Todd Philips had to say–
“While Joaquin and I have talked about it, and while touring the world with Warner Bros executives — going to Toronto, and Venice, and other places — of course, we’re sitting at dinner and they’re saying, ‘So, have you thought about…?’ But, talking about contracts, there’s not a contract for us to even write a sequel, we’ve never approached Joaquin to be in a sequel. Will that happen? Again, I just think the article (by THR) was anticipatory at best.”
So for now, we suggest you to keep your expectations low.
