Dua Lipa has expressed gratitude to social media trolls for motivating her to improve. The 25-year-old singer was chastised for her stage performances early in her career, and Dua believes it helped her become a better dancer.

It was the fall of 2019, and Dua Lipa, a London-based pop singer, was experiencing a rare bout of self-doubt. She’d just cleaned up her Instagram, which is 21st-century pop-star code for symbolic rebirth, and was getting ready to release “Don’t Start Now,” the first single from her second album, Future Nostalgia.

Dua Lipa opened up to fans on Instagram about being bullied for her early performances, saying it “It’s been four years since my debut album and I’m so grateful for all the incredible opportunities and amazing people I’ve met and incredible lessons I’ve learned… touring for like three years, getting bullied online, which made me want to dance my a*** off, and just really get better – so thank you so much.”

Taking to Instagram Stories earlier this week, the Grammy winner celebrated the fourth anniversary of her debut album Lipa, thanking fans and critics alike for assisting her in getting to where she is now.

“For all things good and bad – for helping me grow. I’m forever grateful, and I’m excited for you guys to see what we’ve got coming up next.” She also added that “Just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been listening to my music from the very beginning,” Dua, who released her self-titled debut album in June 2017, said on Instagram Stories.
