One of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema, actress, singer, and theatre personality Angela Lansbury passed away on Tuesday at her Los Angeles home. She was 96 and just, “five days shy of her 97th birthday”, her family announced in a statement.
Ms.Lansbury spent 80 years in Hollywood playing leading roles in classic movies like Gaslight and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Her role in the 1966 Broadaway musical Mame made her a theatre star and gay icon.
She has won prestigious awards like: an honorary Academy Award, five Tony Awards, and six Golden Globes.
Her 1984 television series Murder, She Wrote gained Ms.Lansbury worldwide attention. It went on to become one of the longest-running detective dramas in TV history.
In 2014 Queen Elizabeth II made Ms.Lansbury a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She was married to actor and producer Peter Shaw who passed away in 2003. She is survived by her three children, three grandchildren plus five great-grandchildren, and her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury.
