Love, deceit, and strong emotions might be the ingredients of hundreds of movies made over the years. However, the portrayal of these human feelings will vary from one movie to another. Some of them will make you laugh, and others will leave you feeling teary-eyed for days. Some films will just melt your heart, making you wish to watch them multiple times. One such film is 2007’s “Atonement.” Would you like to take a closer look at it? Here we go!

Before we plunge into the topic, you might wonder what the term, “atonement,” means. Well, it is the action of mending (or making amends) for wrongdoing.

The Cast of “Atonement”

This romantic war drama is based on the novel by Ian Russell McEwan, one of the greatest British authors of all time. The movie, directed by Joe Wright, has prominent stars like James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Dame Vanessa Redgrave, and Saoirse Una Ronan.

The film focuses on a crime and how it affects the characters over a period of six decades. The romance between James McAvoy, who plays the role of the hero, Robbie Turner, and Keira Knightley, who portrays Cecilia, is depicted in a wonderful manner.

The Plot

The film revolves around the wealthy Cecilia, from the Tallis family, and their housekeeper’s son, Robbie. Cecilia’s younger sister, Briony, spies on Cecilia and Robbie. Briony goes on to implicate Robbie, which leads to a turn of events.

The fountain scene, where Robbie breaks a vase accidentally, and Cecilia’s reaction to it, has been portrayed pretty vividly.

After the events that unfold after this scene, the movie continues to the Second World War, four years later. Robbie is seen joining the army. Sometime later, Briony regrets her action of implicating Robbie, and turns to Cecilia for forgiveness.

After many years, Briony is shown as a successful novelist, who gives an interview about her latest book, titled, “Atonement.”

The Movie Location

The shooting took place in Great Britain in 2006. The war scenes were filmed on Dunkirk Beach. Many other afternoon scenes had to be taken only when the sun was in the perfect position!
