He has a multi-racial identity, with an American father and a Filipino mother. He was given a standing ovation on The Tonight Show in 2005, a rare feat that comedians have achieved. Koy is the second Asian host for the Golden Globes Awards.  

Jo Koy used to date another comedian, Chelsea Handler. A year after they announced their relationship, they split. Koy says that the split “was beautiful, it really was.” 

He has won the “Stand-Up Comedian of the Year” award in 2018 during the “Just for Laughs” festival held in Montreal.

Koy is over the moon about his host role. 

He says, “This is everything. It’s different for me. You hear that a lot right now, but it means a lot for someone that looks like me.” He is intent on doing justice for the host role offered to him.
