‘The Crown’ star, Stephen Greif, dies at 78

‘The Crown’ star Stephen Greif has died at the age of 78, his representative announced on Monday. 

The announcement reads, “With great sadness, we announce the death of our wonderful client Stephen Greif. His extensive career included numerous roles on screen and stage, including at the National Theatre, RSC, and in the West End. We will miss him dearly and our thoughts are with his family and friends x.”

The reason for the death is unknown.

Greif is the British actor, who is well-known as Speaker of the House Sir Bernard Weatherill in the fourth season of ‘The Crown’ series, a drama about Britain’s royal family. Stephen’s children are twin brothers, Joseph and Daniel. 

The actor is known widely to British audiences for playing various roles on television programs, including ‘Blake 7’, ‘Citizen Smith, and ‘Coronation Street.’

Stephen was nominated for numerous awards, which included an Olivier Award in 1979.

Many directors and actors shared their condolences to Stephen Greif on Social media. The director Barnaby Edwards tweeted, “Very saddened to hear that Stephen Greif has left us. A rock-solid performer with a voice as liquid and deadly as molten lava. When it came to playing villains, he was unsurpassed. His acerbic wit and obvious intelligence made him a joy to direct. Thanks for the fun, Stephen.”

Actor Phil Davis, who is well known for ‘Sherlock’ also tweeted, “Very sad, a very fine actor and a kind and sensitive man. We played a bit of golf together. RIP.”
