When one sees the official still image of the upcoming Barbie film, Aqua’s Barbie Girl song will surely strike in mind. Margot Robbie in her impeccable blonde hair and the candy-colored car, brings ‘life in plastic,’ and ‘it’s fantastic’! Sadly the iconic, catchy song which took the world by storm in 1997 will not be included in the film.
Reason? Well, Mattel (manufacturer of Barbie) famously sued the Danish-Norwegian band Aqua in the 90s – and lost. And who is producing the Barbie film along with Warner Bros.’? – Mattel films! Considering Aqua’s and Mattel’s past, it would actually be a surprise if the Barbie Girl song is in the movie.
When asked about this, Aqua’s female lead vocalist Lene Nystrøm said that including the song in the film would be like, “cheese on cheese.” Ultimately, “I totally understand why they didn’t use it,” Nystrøm continues, “but it’s going to bring us a lot of attention, no matter what.” Pitching in his opinion, another bandmate, Søren Rasted jokes, “We should say we turned it down. Ryan Gosling is not good enough!”
Aqua is still going strong, with the band releasing a 25th-anniversary edition of their debut album, “Aquarium,” on September 23. They also plan to ramp up their touring schedule.
