John Oliver began this Sunday’s show on Last Week Tonight by commenting on the previously held Democratic National Convention or otherwise stated as “Unconventional convention” by few media because of its reality and absence of people amidst the ongoing pandemic.
“That’s one of those things that sounds like it has gravity but actually means next to nothing, like ‘it is what it is’ or ‘Quibi exclusive,’” stated Oliver jokingly.
Adding to this emphasized the DNC “spent the week steering hard toward the middle of the road.”
When the convention had invitees like Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Stacey Abrams “a lot of time was given to Republicans” which had Meg Whitman, Colin Powell, and John Kasich.
He then went on saying: “It’s hard to convince progressive voters you’re a forward-looking party when your convention feels like a Zoom cast reunion except the show is the 2008 RNC.”
Further speaking on Joe Biden’s speech he said he “played it safe, showcasing his warmth and his empathy.” “But, while he name-checked broad goals like expanding child care or ending racism, the speech was light on detail.”
Rather Joe stated things such as: “Character is on the ballot. Compassion is on the ballot. Decency. Science. Democracy. They’re all on the ballot.”
Moreover, Oliver stated: “Normally, I’d point out that compassion and decency are not concrete policy agendas, but considering open authoritarianism is also on the ballot, sure what the fuck? Adequate vs. evil, let’s go,” revealing pictures of Joe Biden and Trump.
