Margaret Thatcher could be called the mother of Star Wars Day

Many of us might know the tradition to observe the 4th of May as Star Wars Day. The date was chosen for the pun on the famous Star Wars catchphrase “May the Force be with you” as “May the Fourth be with you” and has ever since been accepted and lapped up fans and the Star Wars brand creators as well.

This celebratory practice began in 2011 and become a cult thing in a lot of ways. This line was spoken most famously by Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford, in the Star Wars film, directed by George Lucas that released in 1977. Even since then the phrase  May the Force be with you has become synonymous with the Star Wars.

Margaret Thatcher served as the Leader of the Conservative Party of the United Kingdom from 1975. When she won the election in 1979 and became the Prime Minister on the 4th of May 1979, it prompted her party to place an advertisement in the London Evening News newspaper that said: “May the fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations“.

Although this word pun was recognized to be synonymous with the Star Wars officially after 2011, the seeds of it were sown when the Iron Lady of the United Kindom was sworn to power.
