Well, the IT business world is slightly taken aback when Microsoft CEO Sathya Nadella openly criticized India’s new immigration policies. Though the move was criticized and supported by various organizations around the world, none expected that the leader of a software giant will open-up publicly about the issue.

The recent immigration law by India called the Citizenship Amendment Act, fast-tracks Indian citizenship for immigrants from most major South Asian religions but excluding those who follow Islam. This move is strongly opposed by various nations and secular forces and argues that the move is an attempt to destroy India’s secular ethos and reshape it as a Hindu state that treats Muslims as second-class citizens.

In addition to the official release note, Sathya Nadella also spoke to the Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith at an event in Manhattan. During the interview he quoted “I think what is happening is sad. … It’s just bad. And even a story like mine being possible in a country like this — I think, if anything, I would love to see a Bangladeshi immigrant who comes to India and creates the next unicorn in India or becomes the CEO of Infosys. That should be the aspiration. If I had to sort of mirror what happened to me in the US, I hope that’s what happens in India.”
